The Avengers have a long hall flight from Malaysia to the US. It might just be the perfect time for Steve and Tony to work out exactly what is going on after the whole Ultron incident and discuss this unspoken thing between them. And hey, maybe someone could get Tony some Tylenol too. And a hospital actually.

Tony deflates, promptly. “No, no, I fucking don’t.” He shakes his head, bitterly. “It shouldn’t happen like this. He shouldn’t have to linger on any of it, any of that torment and suffering and misery and fucking horror those evil bastards put him through. It’s not fucking fair.” He jumps off the bed. “I’m, uh, I’m going to re-wet these rags. They’re getting a little dry,” he mutters, in an attempt to vacate the current situation as soon as possible, just for a little bit, so he can get his head on straight.

“Mission Report: December 16th, 1991.”

Tony reels to a stop, just in front of the bathroom door. When he turns around, a shuddering sort of stillness hangs in the air, like everyone’s terrified that a pin is going to drop and destroy everything.

Well, everyone except for Bucky, who groans like he’s dying and stares at Tony with filmy eyes.

“Howard Stark,” he pants. “Maria Stark.”

Unwilling to tell anyone, he replaces himself with a Life Model Decoy and breaks up with Steve, so he can hide and focus on fixing his arc reactor before it's too late.

Steve can't decide if Tony is acting strangely or if that's just his denial speaking. Tony Mark II struggles to figure out the best course of action, stuck handling issues he was never programmed to deal with. And Tony isn't sure he can ever get Steve back, even if he survives.

The arc reactor, despite being a technical marvel, is quite invasive. There have to be side effects to its presence in Tony's chest beyond the now-resolved Palladium poisoning. The team are about to find out just how debilitating it can be. This would be easier if Tony didn't feel the compulsion to hide the fact that he's sick. Misunderstandings all around, especially given Stark's reputation.
