Bucky survives HYDRA’s experimentation just to get stuck in the future (of an alternate dimension) for a week. He’s supremely thankful for the warnings he got there, that prevented the ‘Winter Soldier’ from ever becoming one of his titles, and prevented Steve from earning the nickname “Cap-cicle”. He’s pretty sure he’s dodged both those bullets. Now he just has to make it far enough into the future to meet his alternate-future-self’s fella, and maybe help out with an alien invasion or two along the way. Piece of cake, right?

There were days when the realization that he was someone’s father made Steve's head hurt. Mostly he was grateful that he could trust his instincts, because Peter was what had been missing from his life. Yes, he still had lingering, unresolved issues from his time in the Army, and sure, he had what Bucky annoyingly referred to as a criminally untapped ass and no life outside of work and Peter, but Steve was okay with how his life had turned out because of trusting his instincts.

Unfortunately, those same instincts had straight up betrayed him by going absolutely haywire upon being exposed to Tony Stark.

Veteran single dad Steve runs a tattoo shop. For his 40th birthday, Pepper arranges for Tony to get that tattoo he always wanted, and he winds up with the mother of all crushes instead. Jumping out of airplanes is one thing, but falling in love is something else entirely. Steve struggles with the idea of actually letting someone into his life. Tony is left trying to keep his heart from being broken while Steve figures things out.

Instead, he's now five and a half years old. And he's absolutely terrified of Steve. The Avengers do what they can to keep little-Tony happy until they can get Strange to come take a look at him, and (hopefully) change him back to his rightful age. It's not so easy dealing with a traumatized five-year-old, though, especially one who has some major attachment issues. Toward Bucky, of all people. Throw in some HYDRA shenanigans, and it makes for an interesting time, if not the most peaceful. Older-Tony isn't going to appreciate how much little-Tony blabs, either, but it's pretty hard to tell a five-year-old to shut up when no one wants to hurt his feelings...

Surviving a near death experience was weird. That was the only word that came to mind. Tony vacillated wildly between highs, and lows, but with everything going on, he was mostly able to shove his unwelcome feelings into the background, and focus on his New Life. When you built a badass, flying suit and became a superhero almost overnight, you were definitely allowed to abuse capital letters when talking about your life.

Tony was pretty good at ignoring it, though, because, well… Iron Man. Too busy. Too important. Too many wrongs to right, and people wanting to get their grubby hands on his sexy tech, so there was always a reason to do or think about something other than the flesh and blood Tony Stark’s problems.

Right up until he didn’t have a choice, anymore.
